Swimming Lessons for Autism at 3-1-5: Safety, Support, and Inclusion in the Water

At 3-1-5 Health Club, we believe swimming is a vital life skill — not just for fitness and fun, but for safety and confidence. This is especially true for individuals on the autism spectrum, for whom water safety can be a matter of life and death.

According to data from Autism Swim:

  • More than 50% of those on the autism spectrum are prone to wandering, often gravitating toward bodies of water.

  • The risk of drowning is 160 times higher for individuals on the autism spectrum than for neurotypical peers.

  • 91% of parents in the Autism Swim community have left other aquatic services due to a lack of understanding and support for their child’s needs.

These statistics are not just numbers — they represent families desperately seeking environments where their children are safe, understood, and able to thrive. That’s why, at 3-1-5, we’re proud to offer swimming lessons that are Autism Swim-approved and delivered by instructors who are specially trained to support neurodivergent swimmers.

Our program isn’t just about learning to swim — it’s about creating a calm, structured, and supportive environment where children (and adults) can build water confidence, improve coordination, and develop crucial safety skills at their own pace. We understand that every swimmer is unique, and our sessions are adapted to meet individual needs, whether that means more visual cues, slower transitions, or consistent routines.

Families often tell us how much of a difference it makes to find instructors who get it — who understand that meltdowns are communication, that stimming is part of regulation, and that progress might look different, but is just as meaningful.

By providing autism-friendly swimming lessons, we’re helping to reduce the risk of drowning, give families peace of mind, and open the door to a lifetime of enjoyment in and around water.

If you or someone you know would benefit from our Autism Swim sessions, please get in touch. Let’s work together to make the water a safer, more inclusive space for everyone.
